The "hero city" Volgograd was quietly renamed Stalingrad on the Grave of the Unknown Soldier, Russia's WWII memorial outside the Kremlin walls. I had my first visa-check at that spot. I was nearly arrested there, another time -- for my passport was being held by the Chinese embassy.
